Mandeville, Louisiana

Directly across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans sits the beautiful city of Mandeville, Louisiana.  Founded in 1840, Mandeville quickly became a popular summer destination for New Orleanians.  The steamboats that would transport visitors back and forth across the lake, also led to the spread of Jazz, as music was played onboard and at pavilions in Mandeville.  In fact, Ruby’s Roadhouse and the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Hall are still popular music venues today and are on the National Register of Historic Places. 

History aside, the natural splendor of Mandeville is alive and well today, with the crown jewel of this southern town being Lake Pontchartrain.  From swimming to boating to the Mandeville Trailhead, St. Tammany’s oldest inhabited locality offers a lot of activity and ambiance.  Mandeville also flourishes as a bird sanctuary and is home to the largest certified southern live oak tree, the Seven Sisters Oak.
